eSIM for a Bermuda cruise: what to buy and when to switch it on

Updated · How we compare

Short answer

Buy a short Bermuda eSIM before you sail, install it at home, and keep it switched off until the ship is tied up in Bermuda. At sea, keep cellular data off: the ship’s network isn’t covered by travel eSIMs, and home carriers charge extra for it (AT&T: $20 a day). For two or three days in port, a 1 to 3 GB plan is enough for most people.

Where do cruise ships dock in Bermuda?

Most cruise ships tie up at the Royal Naval Dockyard (King’s Wharf and Heritage Wharf) at the island’s west end. Smaller ships sometimes dock in Hamilton or St. George’s. Ships usually stay in Bermuda for two or three days, so you’ll use your phone on the island for longer than on a typical one-day port call.

What happens to my phone at sea?

Out of range of land, phones connect to the ship’s own cellular network. Travel eSIMs don’t cover it, and home carriers bill it separately from their normal roaming passes. AT&T, for example, charges $20 a day per line at sea, compared with $12 a day on land.

Turn off cellular data before you leave port. On iPhone: Settings → Cellular → turn off Cellular Data, or use Airplane Mode with Wi-Fi on. On Android: Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → turn off Roaming. Do this for your home line on sailing day, before the ship leaves US waters.

Use the ship’s Wi-Fi package if you need to be online at sea.

Which eSIM should I get for a Bermuda cruise?

Cheapest verified options for a cruise stop (checked ): – Airalo 1 GB / 3 days: $6.50 – Airalo 3 GB / 3 days: $18 – Holafly unlimited / 3 days: $19.90 (hotspot limited to 1 GB a day)

A 7-day plan can cost only a little more than a 3-day one and gives you a margin if the ship’s schedule changes: Airalo’s 3 GB for 7 days costs $19.

When does the plan start counting days?

It depends on the provider. Most start when the eSIM first connects to a network in Bermuda, but some start on installation or on purchase. If you buy weeks before sailing, check two things on the plan page: 1. When validity starts (first connection, install or purchase). 2. How long you have to activate it. Nomad, for example, gives you 60 days from purchase.

Our comparison table shows both where the provider states them.

Will my eSIM connect at sea or in other ports?

A Bermuda-only plan works only in Bermuda. If your cruise also stops elsewhere, or you want data on the ship’s network, look at regional (Caribbean) or global plans in the comparison table. Some providers sell cruise plans that include ship networks; we haven’t verified any of them yet.

Step by step for sailing day

  1. At home, a few days before: buy the eSIM and install it on Wi-Fi (how to install). Leave the eSIM line switched off.
  2. Before the ship leaves port: turn off data roaming (or all cellular data) on your home line.
  3. At sea: Wi-Fi only, or airplane mode.
  4. Docked in Bermuda: switch the eSIM line on, set it as your cellular data line, and turn on data roaming for the eSIM line only.
  5. Leaving Bermuda: turn the eSIM line off again before the ship sails.

Common questions

Is there free Wi-Fi at the Dockyard cruise terminal?

Can I use my US phone number in Bermuda with an eSIM?

Yes. Your home SIM stays in the phone. Keep data roaming off on it, and iMessage and WhatsApp keep working with your number over the eSIM’s data.

Is an eSIM cheaper than my carrier’s day pass for a cruise?

Usually. Two days in Bermuda on AT&T’s or Verizon’s day pass costs $24; Airalo’s 1 GB for 3 days costs $6.50. If your T-Mobile plan includes international roaming, you may not need an eSIM at all. Details in the roaming charges guide.

What if my phone isn’t eSIM compatible?

Check first: is my phone eSIM compatible?. If it isn’t, a local prepaid SIM from One or Digicel is the fallback; see Bermuda SIM card vs eSIM.
